the

roadmap

to a Safe Hopeful Healthy BR

Baton Rouge has a diverse set of stakeholders (institutional and community) working tirelessly to promote advancement, wellness, and safety through numerous programs, policies, and initiatives.

However, the Parish lacks a unified vision and overarching plan for working in a more coordinated manner to advance community wellness, and public safety.

Recognizing this gap and the urgent need for an “all hands-on deck” approach, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome, and other city-parish leaders adopted a public health approach to reducing violence in Baton Rouge – one that would address the underlying factors that contribute to violence, build on community assets and culture, and systematically apply data and science to ensure effective solutions.

What is the planning lab?

The Community Safety Planning Lab is a platform for institutional stakeholders to connect with community organizations and expand the community-led aspect of the EBR Gun Violence Collaborative.

The primary objective is to facilitate actionable strategies that enable community stakeholders and municipal government to effectively combat violence in our neighborhoods.

What was the goal?

Through interactive sessions, panel discussions, and collaborative exercises, the Community Safety Planning Lab sought to encourage participants to share their experiences, perspectives, and existing public safety plans and resources in Baton Rouge. This inclusive environment fostered mutual learning and cultivated a collective understanding of effective community-driven solutions to violence.
